Abuse In William Faulkner's A Rose For Emily

A Rose for Emily is definitely not a positive story by no means. Instead, it rather shows what it is like to live with a mental disorder, as the main character Emily did. Though positivity is not a central subject in a Rose for Emily, one can find that pain is a more fitting. Emily surroundings seem to move forward as she holds on to the past. It is said that Emily’s house was once elegant and located in an upscale neighborhood, but now her home seemed to stick out more than she did. However, the lack of interest in Emily’s life did not stop the whole community to coming to her funeral. Emily suffered from being mentally abused while growing up. Due to her father’s abuse, she never quite devolved adequate social skills and the ability to adapt in present day society. Since she struggled with social skills much of the community did not know how to treat Emily, and that lead to no one trying to communicate with her. However, the community was ever so interested in every move she made and everything she did sparked curiosity. After the public found out she had her first boyfriend, she was later spotted purchasing rat poison. After a few months’ …show more content…
The climax comes in the middle when Emily responds to the drug store clerk that the rat poison she was purchasing was for “rats”. This gives us an inside clue as to what she thought of Homer Barron and maybe people in general. She wanted a normal life but maybe she realized Homer could not give that to her, so she thought she only had one choice, exterminate. Although one does not know for sure what really happen it can be concluded that she in fact killed her only boyfriend. Not only did Homer die, but a part of Emily did as well. Her last strand of normalcy faded away as her mind seemed to do. Due to the mental state that she was in, I do not feel like she was capable of making decisions as a normal person

The way “A Rose for Emily” is written shows the incredible effectiveness of foreshadowing and writing stories with different orders to begin from. From beginning with her funeral to jumping to when her father was alive and even the days before her death, the story shows how Emily, the protagonist, grows to be who she is at the end of the story. William Faulkner writes the “A Rose for Emily” lacking chronological order of the events in the story. Starting with Emily’s funeral, he quickly jumps to her life story, explaining issues with her father, her father’s death, the impact of his death on Emily and ending with the murder of a man she fell in love with who did not love her back. The story keeps the suspense for its readers while leaving…

In this story we see her almost as a monument or a tradition, but at the same time she is empathized and consoled. The actuality that can be seen as someone reading the story from the outside, shows that she is often looked at as irritating in the ways that she demands to live her life on her own terms. Emily is the classic outcast, supervising and regulating the town’s access to her true identity by remaining hidden, which in the end is the reason she died alone and…

We often focus more on the protagonist of stories, but what about the antagonist? Reading all three of the short stories Where Have You Been by Joyce Carol Oates, A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor, and A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, they all expand the idea of the “bad guy.” The antagonists are the ones that truly develop the situation of stories, because without them there wouldn't be a conflict, or a story in general... At least not an interesting one to say the most.…

“A Rose for Emily” is an allegory of the life of the old South and how Emily’s life is symbolically over. After Emily’s father passed away, Emily rarely goes out and one can only tell the time based on the color of her hair and how it was styled. It is not surprising, then, that when her father dies, Miss Emily would not let him go, probably as some kind of punishment rather than out of actual grief. The only time Miss Emily seems happy is when she is breaking the code of her Old Southern upbringing and has a rather scandalous affair with Homer Barron. Of course, this affair goes against every value and tradition her father instilled in her and eventually prompts her, in her desperation not to be left alone again, to kill and keep Homer Barron with her…
