Yet, when I read an article on a Texas prison that neglected their inmates what I found was not the first thing I thought about when I thought about neglect since the stories they talked about were just disturbing since it sounded like high level abuse of a different kind. It talked about how the Texas prison had set up a work force that forces inmates to cut stone. No this doesn’t sound bad on the outside but when I looked closer I found something disturbing since the article said: “Convicts assigned to state projects existed in the same dismal, cruel, and inhumane conditions as those leased to private entities. Self-mutilation, such as cutting off one's fingers or toes or otherwise injuring oneself to avoid the lease work, was commonplace, as was suicide.” (Price, Coleman) Meaning that the inmates where worked so hard they would rather harm themselves than be forced to work for this program. Yet, this case is special since they neglected the care of the inmates so much that even after the inmates self-mutilated themselves the guards would punish them for not work which is just plain abuse. So, though this is not the first time I have heard of inmates working in prison this was the first time I have read something like this proving that even simple neglect of the inmates can turn into hard core
