The characters of this story include the old grandfather, his little grandson Misha, the grandfather’s son, and the son’s wife. In the beginning, the son and his wife treat the grandfather horribly and will not even let him eat with the family (Tolstoy, 1-11), until Misha makes a wooden bowl for when his parents, the grandfather’s son and his wife, are old (Tolstoy, 14-17). This makes Misha’s parents feel ashamed, and they began to take better care of the grandfather from then on (Tolstoy, 18-21). The poem, “Abuelito Who” is about a granddaughter who is remembering the memories that she shared with her grandfather before he became too old to play with her. “ In the Russian folktale “The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson” retold by Leo Tolstoy and the poem, “Abuelito Who” by Sandra Cisneros a similar and significant theme is one should always enjoy life because one’s time here on this planet is limited. In “The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson” it states, “... his eyes could not see.” This quote supports the theme because he used to be able to see very easily but it isn’t as easy anymore because of aging. In the folktale another quote that demonstrates the theme is, “He tried to move the bowl closer; it fell to the floor and broke.”…

I went into the performance of Independence not knowing anything about the piece, but once the play started I was able to relate to the characters in many ways. The piece was set in a small town in Iowa, much like where I’m from, and it explored the difficulties of aging families, something nearly everyone will experience. Comparing the characters to myself evoked many thoughts about my family, and if small town life is what my future holds. One idea presented in the piece was parents and families growing older, eventually causing a family member to sacrifice something, to take care of their parents when the…
