Before I analyze the film Chungking Express, I would like to briefly introduce its director—Wang Kar-Wai, a great master who specialized in describing protagonists’ characteristics by details and the whole environment. Since he grows up in Hong Kong, a former British colony involving Chinese culture and western culture, he has lots of thinking on this metropolis and the people living there. Thus he directs bunch of films such like Chungking Express, telling the love stories happened in Hong Kong via protagonists’ characteristics and background music. In this movie, there are two independent and interconnected love stories as well as four protagonists: cop 233, A-Fei, cop 663, and female killer. Wang Kar-Wai tells us that urban people are lonely…

Movies are presented from how a director sees the book and often times does not even use the same dialog that is used in the book. While many movies that are made from books stay true to the book, The Kite Runner movie, directed by Marc Forster, does not give a complete understanding of the book of the same name written by Khaled Hosseini. One of the most important elements from the book, the rape of Hassan by Assef, is not fully depicted in the movie. The rape scene is important to understand the tension between Hassan’s status in life and Amir’s self-centeredness. The reality and brutality of the actual rape highlights Amir’s betrayal of Hassan because Amir does not stand up for Hassan or try to help him afterwards.…

I choose this passage because it evidently shows the unhealthy relationship between Laila and Mammy. At the beginning of the novel it is seen that Fariba is a happy, loving mother but she suddenly changes when her sons leave for war. Although Mammy cares for her daughter she is consumed with her sons departure. Laila is a constant reminder to Mammy of her two sons, as a result Laila is abandoned. Laila is yet very caring and considerate to towards her mother, “ Laila used to sit for hours outside the door.”…

Hosseini 's exploration of Amir and Baba’s arduous relationship is centered around this kite as Amir believes it will create the connection he has longed for. Amir’s role as a flawed protagonist is solidified within this chapter, in some ways it had been alluded to previously but not to this significant degree. The core conflict of the novel is that of an internal struggle to rid oneself of guilt, the guilt that has been created through the betrayal of Hassan which is reflected upon by the narrator, Amir, who reflects on the strife he felt at the time, and how he attempted to avoid the feeling by avoiding eye contact and then later any kind of association. Hassan on the other hand has his positive characteristics exemplified in this chapter, primarily that of his unyielding loyalty, which makes his suffering even more tragic when compared to Amir. Hassan eases Amir’s worries assuring him that there is no monster to be afraid of, only a beautiful day of kite fighting showing just how well he understands Amir.…

Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns narrates the lives of two Afghan women through three generations of war and conflict in Afghanistan. At first glance, the novel appears to be a appalling depiction of the injustice and cruelty towards women in Afghan society. However, Hosseini’s message may be far more hopeful than the novel’s grim atmosphere may suggest. A Thousand Splendid Suns depicts the conflict in Afghanistan through the lens of the country’s oppressed women. Yet, the novel actually breaks western stereotypes of Afghanistan by highlighting acts of resistance and bravery among its female characters.…
