Nagel does not believe that life is absurd is about life meaning nothing because it will mean nothing in the distant future. Though Nagel used this very simple example of his point, his main idea is bigger than everyday life. The absurd is when you look at your life from an outer point and wonder does it matter, does it have meaning. Nagel also thinks that the absurd is inescapable. There is no way to make your life not absurd because every day no matter what you do. A person must make a choice of what they do that day. Even if a person lays in bed every minute of the day they still make a choice to do that. That means they must take their serious in some sense. Today, I will tell you five of them. First is identify completely with a universal viewpoint which is based on some Oriental Religions. This believes that no one is separate but are a part of something bigger and eternal. The next way people think they can escape is only doing things through impulse. But even in that you must make a choice to listen to your impulses and these impulses might hurt yourself. A person could try to escape though defiance which is kind of like shaking a fist at the world. This is a way some people live their life but they live in spite and are more angry people overall. On the other hand, this could be looked at as determination. It depends on the person. The next is humor and this is the way that Nagel said is the best. He says that yes life is absurd but why be mad at it just laugh at the bad things that happen and enjoy your life. The final is suicide but that is giving up on the problem of the absurd rather than confronting it. An example of this is if you have a bad roommate you can either work it out or you can avoid him for the whole year. The second option is kind of like suicide that not dealing with the problem isn’t the best solution.
Nagel does not think that the absurd is necessarily a bad thing. He said “Absurdity is one of the most human things about us: a manifestation of our most advanced and interesting characteristics.” I think that Nagel is right about the
