Arnold, the main character in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, would argue that fighting for family is of the greatest importance. For instance, after Mary, Arnold's sister, died in a house fire, Arnold and his dad have a heart-to-heart moment. "'I love you,' he said. Wow. He hardly ever said that to me. 'I love you, too,' I said. I never said that to him" (Alexie 207). After Mary’s death, Arnold and his dad have a moment in the car where they say the words “I love you” to each other. This exhibits Arnold’s and his dad’s clear feelings of support after many gruesome events.
