Sherman Alexie’s, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian” is the account of Arnold Spirit, also known as Junior. Junior is the novel’s narrator and while he is witty and seemingly proud of his heritage in the beginning of the story, it appears the point of the novel is to show us Junior’s transformation. He begins life on the reservation, attending school in Wellpinit, Washington. Eventually, he transfers to an all-white high school twenty-two miles from the reservation in Reardan, where he begins to change. A shallow reader may think the novel is only about Junior’s journey, but actually, Alexie has managed to show us the difference between Arnold Spirit and Junior as two separate people.…

It had funny remarks in it like some from stuck in neutral it was also perverted. But it did make a point about how certain things happen during schools work from bullying to the different people in the school. It reminded me a lot of the movie the outsiders as well because Junior was born into being an indian but he made that not have to mader at the new school he went to.…

By creating that type of character, Alexie therefore can make a better connection with his audience of Indian youth, because they most likely had a similar upbringing, and have a similar attitude. This type of attitude can also appeal to Alexie’s secondary audience (society as a whole), because people would be more apt to listen to Alexie’s argument if he did not come across as pretentious. An appeal to pathos is also achieved through Alexie’s mention of an uneven childhood that was often filled with doubts if they could support themselves since it makes the audience feel sympathy for his situation. Alexie uses this appeal to pathos in order to strengthen his appeal to ethos, and to gain his audiences’ sympathy and attention. Through these two appeals, Alexie is able to make a connection between his family’s situation and the humanities.…
