When you grow up, there are many people that help you along the way. They provide you with an example and wisdom as you mature into adulthood. These people help you transform from a child to an adult. A lot of the time this person is a family member or an adult that you look up to. It can also just be a friend that grows up with you. These people provide a support system and assist you in your journey. In the novel, Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, Junior matures with the help of his grandmother's wisdom, Mr. P’s ideas and his coach's encouragement. One influential person in Junior’s life that helped him grow up was his grandmother. P. to never give up on himself, no matter what. Without the push from Mr. P, Junior would have never left the reservation and kept his hope. Junior’s basketball coach at Reardan also made a huge impact on Junior’s transition into adulthood. He encouraged Junior to always be the best he can be. When Junior faced Wellpinit in the basketball game, he was knocked unconscious. Coach came to see him in the hospital and stayed with him all night. He kept Junior company and helped him get through it and stay strong. In the final matchup between Reardan and Wellpinit, Coach explained to the team that they could win because they have their secret weapon. He said, “We have Arnold Spirit”(Alexie 188). He told Junior that he was even going to be starting and would guard Rowdy. Junior was nervous and didn’t believe in himself. Coach said to him, “You can do it”(Alexie 188). To Junior, this was a big deal and he eventually started to believe that Coach was right and he could do it. Junior’s basketball coach taught him to believe in himself and never doubt what he is capable of if he sets his mind to it.
