Have you ever been treated badly because you are different? In the Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, Junior, a mentally handicapped and Native American student, is often bullied. Although stereotyped and made fun of, both for his race and his brain disability, Junior’s friends help get him through these hard times. His friends have helped him persevere in spite bullying, death of loved ones, and have stood by his side even through their fights. Friends are essential in times of need to help cope with reality. Rowdy always makes sure that Junior is ok, Junior gets beat up a lot and Rowdy is always ready to jump in and protect him, therefore Junior cares deeply about their friendship. He knows that my brains are fragile.”(21). Rowdy was concerned about Junior because he knows his brain is very easy to damage. Junior has Hydrocephalus which is one of the reasons he is made fun of so much. Rowdy has known Junior for forever so he knows that life has been tough for him. In addition Junior really values Rowdy and his friendship “I didn’t want to laugh. I wanted to stop laughing. I wanted to grab Rowdy and hang onto him. He was my best friend and I needed him” (210). Rowdy cares a lot about Junior and he knew that Junior needed someone to be there for him at his sister's funeral, even though Junior at the time didn't know he was there Rowdy came because he knew that he would need emotional support. For example at Rearden Junior has made new friends that stick up for him just like Rowdy once did “He looks so strong he looks like a warrior he was protecting me like a row he used to protect me of course, he would have thrown the book at the teacher then punch her” (175). In the past the only person who would stick up for Junior was Rowdy, but now that Junior moved schools, he has more people that are looking after him. Gordy, who was a new friend of Juniors stood up for him when a teacher was telling him that he shouldn’t be missing so much school, the only reason that Junior was missing so much school was due to the deaths of family members and friends. In addition Junior really trusts his friends especially Rowdy “But he is my best human friend and he cares about me, so he would always tell me the truth” (16). Junior believes that Rowdy will not lie to him because they have been through alot together and are best friends. Rowdy would also always tell Junior the truth because he values their friendship and doesn’t want Junior to not trust him. Even though Junior has never had a lot of friends, he has a couple very good friends that will stick up for him and who will protect

Comparative Essay “If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be lead, like sheep to the slaughter.” (George Washington) In “The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part Time Indian” and “The Boy Who Dared” this is a great and bold statement for these two novels. These two books are magnificent examples of two boys that decided to take their life into their own hands and not leave it in the mainstream of hopeless and following people. Thomas King expresses his major concerns such as arrogant and insensitive nature of white people, racism and discrimination and human right violation that took place in the history of Canada predominantly towards the first nation people in Canada, in the book The Short History of Indians in Canada. Sherman Alexie’s, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian” is the account of Arnold Spirit, also known as Junior. Junior is the novel’s narrator and while he is witty and seemingly proud of his heritage in the beginning of the story, it appears the point of the novel is to show us Junior’s transformation. He begins life on the reservation, attending school in Wellpinit, Washington. Eventually, he transfers to an all-white high school twenty-two miles from the reservation in Reardan, where he begins to change. A shallow reader may think the novel is only about Junior’s journey, but actually, Alexie has managed to show us the difference between Arnold Spirit and Junior as two separate people.…
