Absinthe Drinkers Analysis

The Absinthe Drinkers is an impressionist piece by J.F. Raffaelli in 1881. Raffaelli chose to create this using oil on canvas. I think this was a great choice because with the use of harsh brush strokes and lighting the impressionist style really became apparent. Raffaelli really stood out as an artist because of how he executed his contemporary art. Nothing was idealized or made to seem better than it was; he chose topics that were relevant to the times and depicted them in a relatable way. This piece stood out to me because I feel as though even though only two men are being shown, we get an idea of what the entire country was like at that time. We see the struggle and the pain that people were going through as if these men were the face of it all. It really tells a story. …show more content…
They have a hopeless expression on their faces like they are tired and drunk, staring off in opposite directions showing that even though they are physically together, there are still some apparent disjointness between the two that makes it seem like they are still alone even with one another. You can see behind them that even the tree is dying as sort of a representation of the depression being shown here. There is a small home in the background all by itself also showing the loneliness of the piece. The artist used very deep and dark colors to express the melancholy tone of the piece. Even though the background has color and some light, the men are made with little light and very dark colors as the center and focus of the piece. They are two empty seats next to them which must have been included for a reason thus giving a greater sense of loneliness the men

The story of Louis Zamperini in Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken tells the struggle of the Olympic athlete from being lost at sea for almost two months to being a prisoner of war in multiple camps of Japan. The pain that Louie experienced was not all physical. The veteran’s exposure to mental abuse matched equally (possibly even more) to the amounts of beatings he got on a daily basis. After the war Louis suffered from PTSD which eventually lead him into alcoholism. Even though alcoholism is a serious disease, Louis Zamperini quotes that there is one thing worse than alcoholism, hatred.…

Formal Analysis: David Bourdon and Gregory Battcock David Bourdon and Gregory Battcock is an oil on canvas piece by the artist Alice Neel. In this piece you see two seated men, one in suit and tie and the other only in underwear. Both men seem to be staring off into the distance with disinterest. This piece is actually a portrait of the openly gay couple. Is poetry banal? I had always thought poetry was the most boring topic to study at school, I just hated analysing old poems and explaining their meaning. But one day, I was listening to one of my favourite artists, Ed Sheeran, and I realised that even songs nowadays contain poetry, conveying a myriad of feelings and emotions. They have deep meanings and by reading the lyrics can be understood and appreciated. The quote “sentiment and language are not defunct in the 21st century” by McFadden is absolutely correct.…

At the same time, the couple appears to be entangled in the warmth of the gold blanket or cover in which they lie in. The background suggests a night sky, or maybe a cloudy time during the day, but it’s definitely dark outside. The two bodies appear to almost teeter at the edge of a flowery meadow atop what looks to be a cliff or some may say that it may appear that they are laying down in the flowery meadow. Depending on how you interpreted it, it will either give the notion that they are in danger of cascading into the darkness down below the cliff or that they could just lay there for hours and hours. Klimt's biographer Frank Whitford actually has pointed out that earlier studies for the picture show the man with a beard, suggesting that he might be meant to represent the artist himself, (which is not uncommon practice, just look at the Mona Lisa?) while the woman represents…

It is enriched in deep contrasting oil colors such as deep reds, greens, blues, and flesh-tones. There is an almost forced focus with the obvious use of dark and lights (the cavalier is extremely highlighted while his companion is deeply shadowed). From observation, it seems to be your very typical Baroque painting from the seventeen hundredths where colors were dramatically exaggerated to provoke emotion and express passion in extremely contrasting styles, but it also incorporates symbolism, (much like Vanitas still life). There is a distinct distance between the two figures, in which a skeleton is observing the two men. Not only does the skeleton linger above the drinking men, he is also holding, what seems to be, another skull in his hands and an hourglass in the other.…

In every romance or drama movie, the boy meets a girl, boy saves the girl (or vice versa), and then they fall in love. We see this scenario repeated in all sorts of media, but also in our own lives. Why do we fall in love? The answer is not always clear, but one thing for certain is that love is important for us as humans. “The lover” figure exists for us because love is something that all of us are ‘supposed’ to find.…

Van Gogh uses color in a very deliberate and effective way in The Night Café. He selects the colors not based on his visual interpretation of the room but on the psychological and emotional effects it has on its occupants. He explains to his brother Theo, in a letter, that he uses the red and green in an attempt to express the terrible passions of human nature. The use of these colors helps to illustrate the intensity of the Café de la Gare and provoke the emotions of the viewer who may relate the bar scene to alcoholism or depression. He also balances the wooden browns and yellows of the lower half of the painting with a dark wooden clock adorned with a vibrant yellow face at the top of the painting.…
