Abraham's Obedience Research Paper

God calls to the faithful Abraham for another test of his obedience. Immediately, Abraham submits to God not with a question but indicating he is ready to serve; “here I am.” In verse 2 God starts the test by telling Abraham to take his son obviously Abraham did not know which son, so God says your favorite one, where Abraham indicates it was Sarah that favored one over the other and that God told him to follow whatever Sarah says. God then becomes specific indicating Isaac, whom you love. Abraham has no response once it is indicated it is Isaac and God is aware Isaac is the one he loves.
God tells Abraham to take Isaac for a burnt offering to the land of Moriah. Abraham inquires “where shall I go, Moriah is a big place and I know this sacrifice is important to You.” God tells Abraham he will show him. This statement gives Abraham strength to do as commanded because he realizes God is with him. Abraham has already negotiated with God (Genesis 18:23-32) and realizes if God is with him he has yet another opportunity to negotiate for Isaac.

Once again, Abraham lies in an alien land and uses Sarah to safeguard his life. Similar to the fate of the Pharaoh, the deity threatens King Abimelech’s life because of Abraham’s deceit. However, this time, the deity states that Abraham is a prophet and informs the king that Abraham has the power to pray for him and save his life. King Abimelech gives Abraham sheep, oxen, and male and female slaves just as the Pharaoh had done in Egypt. Thus, from one narrative to the next, as Abraham journeys through alien lands, he gains not only material resources, including livestock and slaves, which improves his social-economic status, but he also receives land and silver (20:16) and increased socio-religious status and power through his covenant with the Lord and the Lord’s conference of the position “prophet” upon him.…

Not only did God ask Abraham to follow him, but he also promised to bless him and make of his descendants a great nation. When God commands Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, his beloved son, Abraham is ready to obey God, but God chooses not to require the sacrifice. I believe that this is an important step in the relationship of God with his people, as it shows how much God loves his people if they follow God’s will. The promise of God to Abraham and his descendants is something that can be found through the history of Christianity. The promise of God continued from Abraham to Isaac, to Jacob (known as Israel) and then to Joseph (Jacob’s son) who God used to take Abraham descendants to a secure place (Egypt).…

The Abrahamic covenant explained in the Hebrew bible is one of great importance in Judaism. Abraham is known as “the first Hebrew patriarch” (Molloy 299). In this covenant Abraham was told by God to leave his home and go to a land that would be shown to him. Here he would be used to make a “great nation”. God enters this contract with Abraham and in return for providing him with land, security, and descendants he tells Abraham that they must be circumcised (Gen 12:1-2).…

This was a test to see if he had faith in god, but not just to see if god existed. Abraham believed that no matter what happens to Isaac, he will have Isaac back at the end. Since Abraham withstood the test, at the last minute when he went to sacrifice isaac, he was allowed to sacrifice a ramp instead. Therefore, Kierkegaard described Abraham as the knight of faith because his action was not universal. He did everything as god commanded without anyone 's advice or without telling anyone.…

God commanded Abraham, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you” and Abraham obeyed (Gen 22:2-3 NRSV). Out of all the possible places, God singled out Mount Moriah to be the ground in which this religious test would take place. Upon his arrival to Mount Moriah, Abraham was set to sacrifice his child, but God stopped him before he could prevail. Instead, God provided a ram to take Isaac’s place and God said, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided” (Gen 22:14 NRSV). The relationships found throughout Old Testament were based on people’s obedience towards God’s instruction; probably making it one of the most important relational aspect. According to International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, obedience is defined as, “the supreme test of faith in God and reverence for him” (Obedience). God uses many prominent people in the Old Testament who obey and listen to what he calls them to do. For this paper, I’ll be using the story of Abraham as an example of obedience and go more in details about how God used Abraham’s life because he was obedient.…
