The style of art represented by Abraham Rattner’s Crucifixion would be Abstract Expressionism. Abstract Expressionism is a term that grew out of the German Expressionist movement. It was also in some ways a reaction against the social realism that had found mainstream popularity, but also a logical continuation of both Surrealism and Cubism. Rattner’s artwork appears to be somewhat of a puzzle. When looking at this artwork, I have to search for familiar images, and if found, I question why Rattner would put such image in this artwork. There is a constant overlap and blend together so that I view the artwork as a whole and not as segments.
Rattner’s height in popularity began in the 1940’s. It was during this time period that he began using

Flogging brings me to the next symbol present in the painting. Questions arise solely with the lack of use. The detail done in the “cat o nine tails” creates the appearance of it being new instead of used many times to torture Christ. To the untrained eye putting items and a story reference with what she has painted. The next item that has an odd context are the lack of wounds on his head.…

All the figures pictured occupy space and have weight. As the piece moves backward toward where Christ is nailed to the cross, there is a definite recession of space. Van Eyck uses this receding background to denote depth, and it is only further enhanced by the intricately detailed, by tiny buildings in the back, and the atmospheric perspective employed on the even further receding landscape. The distraught bodies of the Mary’s engage the viewer’s interest in the foreground. As one looks at The Crucifixion’s contrasting piece, The Last Judgment, this occupation of natural space is seemingly lost.…

Jalen Booker Instructor Benjamin Sorenson, MA Western Civilization 10 November 2017 Misconceptions Behind the Methodology of Roman Crucifixions: The Brutal Truth For centuries and centuries on end now, mankind has come to recognize crucifixion as one of the most vulgar, and brutal forms of execution that the world has ever known. Whenever we think of the numerous iconic figures who met their fates on the cross (including St. Peter the Apostle, St. Andrew the Apostle, and even Jesus Christ of Nazareth), we instantly begin to visualize the gruesome torture that they were set to endure. However, I am still convinced that many do not fully understand the extent of pain, and suffering that the cross distributed upon its victims.…

In his book The World’s Sixteen Crucified Saviors Before Christ Kersery Garves makes the assertion that “Here we will note it as a curious circumstance, that several of the above-named Saviors are represented as being black, Jesus Christ included with this number. There is as much evidence that the Christian Savior was a black man, or at least a dark man, as there is of his being the son of the Virgin Mary, or that he once lived upon the Earth. And that evidence is the testimony of disciples who had nearly as good an opportunity of knowing what his complexion was as the evangelists, who omit to say anything about it”. The book of Revelations clearly states that Jesus himself had “Feet like bronze and hair like wool” depicting him to be the…

Humans naturally seek out the truth, and believe anything that seemingly appears to reinforce their viewpoint. Religion teaches already gullible followers to believe that integrity is absolute and constant. If paired with individuals that seek to take advantage of this fact, calamitous disasters would undoubtedly pursue. In Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible, the Puritan religion led to the destruction of Salem due to the restrictions and regulations set by the beliefs. The religion damned those who lied, as it was against the commandment “thou shall not bear false witness to your neighbor” and the village irresponsibly used the commandment to offer false testimonies.…
