Jenna left home at 17 due to her parent’s habitual drug usage, creating an unsafe environment, subjecting her to a cycle of psychological abuse, neglect and many times a witness to violent altercations between her parents. Over the last three years, Jenna left home on many occasions. Her attendance history is erratic due to her moves, and she is credit deficient for a junior. Jenna is now staying at a shelter that is located within your district and Jenna would like to register for school. Based a series of question you realize that Jenna is homeless and considered an unaccompanied youth. What are the legal and ethical responsibilities in enrolling Jenna? The dilemma presented was based on Jenna’s lack of permanent residency, legal guardianship and the necessary documentation required to register for school. The school administration is responsible to register Jenna regardless of her inability to have a legal guardian with her and her lack of required documentation. The school register was aware of the district’s policies that had been created for students who are homeless and wanted to register for school. She was able to contact the homeless liaison, who assisted her in registering Jenna, she also brought in the counselor who would be assigned to Jenna. Together they determined the support Jenna would need in order to meet her basic needs, additional outside resources and the support and guidance in meeting the graduation requirements. Jenna would be provided a tutor who would work with her one time per week, and be responsible for reviewing her attendance, and grades and set weekly goals. Jenna would also receive transportation to get her to and from school. Her mentor and the liaison would work together to secure resources such as food stamps and health care. The counselor would also work on credit recovery based on work previously
