They are known in most countries as kind hearted and trustworthy people. Because of this excellent reputation, events and informational sermons would be well received and well attended not only by members of the faith but also by non-believers who simply want to enact change. Christians are also called by the Lord to serve him. The earth is his own creation and therefor its wellbeing is near and dear to Christian’s hearts. The members of the church should feel compelled to preserve our planet because of their personal connection to its creator. In his encyclical the Pope also stated, “We are not God. The Earth was here before us and was given to us" (Francis). The earth was given to us, so it is our duty to ensure that it is well nursed. Christians are called upon to serve the Lord and all of his creations. What better way to serve his creation than to preserve it? These verses should put weight on Christians’ hearts and call them to act now. There are many people who roll their eyes and choose to ignore the problems facing the environment. Many people choose to look into problems that appear, though only on the surface, to be more pressing that the destruction of our environment. Starving people, drug and sex trafficking, and many other heinous crimes hold great importance and certainly need to be addressed daily. These problems, however, if we continue on our current path those problems will not even have the chance to exist without an earth to exist within. In the grand scheme of things the environment is a very pressing matter. The problem is that America is a here and now nation. It is hard to push people to care about a problem when it does not affect them directly and immediately. Christians need to join together to ensure the safety of our future while still maintaining the projects and outreach programs in place today. The future of our planet and the future of humanity depend on our actions today. There will be no playgrounds for future generations of children, no Oceans or forests for wildlife to thrive, our eco-system as we know it can and will diminish if immediate action is not taken.
