This is due to the fact that our society only rewards motivational behavior that is based on approval, affection or other social needs. Instead of focusing only on psychopathology, self-actualization is interested in human potential and how that potential can be achieved. Self-actualization is based on self-fulfillment and personal growth obtained through the discovery of what is important to the person. Each person is unique in their search for self-fulfillment and growth through the discovery of meaning in life that is significant to them. For some people self-actualization can be achieved through the creation of works of art or literature, while for others it is work, education or sports.
