Lincoln’s parents were Thomas and Nancy Lincoln, they came from Virginia and crossed the Appalachian Mountains into Kentucky. History of Lincoln’s parents suggest that both of his parents had the characteristics of melancholy. The majority of the descriptions of Nancy Lincoln have her as sad. This is a sign that Nancy Lincoln more than likely suffered with depression as well. Lincoln himself described his mother as "intellectual, sensitive and somewhat sad" (Siegel, 2005). Additionally, Abraham’s father, cousins, and uncle also suffered with mental illness. I never knew that he had suffered with major depression and I have learned a remarkable amount about Abraham Lincoln through doing this paper. Lincoln is a great example that you can still accomplish great things in life even when facing adversity. Also, I have learned much about how depression makes a person feel and how hopeless life can seem for people who have depression.
