Abraham Lincoln's Influence On The Confederate States

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in Kentucky. When he was a boy, his family was very poor. He had a brother and a sister, but his brother died in childhood. They grew up in a small log cabin house, with just one room inside. When Lincoln was 7 years old, his family moved to Indiana and later to Illinois. So, Lincoln didn’t get much formal education. In his early years, he was influenced by his father who refused to own slaves even though it was legal at the time. Even though he didn’t go to school much as a child, he started working as a lawyer in 1937. As a lawyer, some of his clients were free black people and freed slaves. In 1842, Lincoln married Mary Todd. The couple had four children, but three of them died when they were very young. Abraham Lincoln was sometimes called Abe Lincoln or "Honest Abe". People called him this when he started a business that failed. After his failure, he stayed and worked to pay off his debt. This was the start of the Civil War. During the War, he gave the Emancipation Proclamation and ordered the freedom of all slaves in ‘Confederate States’. Actually, it did not immediately free all those slaves but it did immediately free any slaves in northern states. After the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address, one of the most famous speeches in American history. On April 14th, 1865, Lincoln went to a play with his wife at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C.. During the play, the President was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln has been consistently called one of the greatest U.S. presidents. He is often considered the greatest president for his leadership during the American Civil War and his articulateness in speeches.
