Abraham Lincoln was the United States 16th president, he served from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln lead us through our Civil War - our bloodiest war and our greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis. In doing this he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.
Born in Hodgeville, Kentucky, Lincoln grew up on the Western frontier in kentucky and Indiana. Largely self-educated, he became a lawyer in Illinois, a Whig Party leader, and a member of the Illinois House of Representatives, in which he served for twelve years. Sherman's raid on Atlanta helped create Lincoln's reelection in 1864. In April 1865, Richmond fell and Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox
