On April 14, 1865 at 10:15 a.m. Americans hearts sunk to the news that President Lincoln had been shot in the head and was mortally wounded. John Wilkes Booth, a well known popular actor had assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in his presidential box at Ford’s theatre while he was attending the play “Our American Cousin”. John Wilkes Booth had many accomplices help him successfully assassinate President Abraham Lincoln in one shot and to get out of the state to attempt to stay hidden from everybody trying to find him.
John Wilkes Booth's original plan was to kidnap Lincoln and trade him back for a few thousand confederate troops to be released from northern prions but because Robert E Lee had surrendered the largest confederate army the war was over and there was no need for troops. He left on horseback with David Herold and they went to Maryland to see Doctor Mudd because of Booth’s broken leg(Levins). Doctor Mudd put a splint on Booth’s leg so he could at least walk for short distances. When Herold and Booth arrived in Virginia on horseback they used a barn as temporary shelter. In a few days the police found them inside of the barn and gave them the option to surrender or they would light the barn on fire.
