He received the second highest of votes out of 13 candidates. During this time he met and fell in love with Ann Rutledge but before they could marry she became sick with brain fever and died on August 25, 1835. Lincoln then became very depressed and his friends were afraid he would commit suicide but he dove into the books and studied law so he could become a lawyer. In September 1836 he passed the bar to practice law in Illinois. He was reelected in 1838 and received the most votes of the seven winning candidates. On 9/22/1862 the Final Emancipation Proclamation passed and it stated that on 1/1/1863 all slaves were to be freed. They had one hundred days to free all the slaves and they were set free forever. The one hundred days passed and none of the slaves had been set free. The volunteering for war had almost stopped and more troops were needs. So Lincoln signed a draft on 3/3/1863. It’s main purpose was to increase man power. One million men volunteered during the time the draft was in effect. Draft itself produced 170,000 soldiers.
