Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president. He was president from 1861 - 1865. He helped free many black slaves and supported freeing black slaves for most of his life. Abraham Lincoln was born in Hodgenville Kentucky on February 12, 1809. His biological parents were Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. On October 5, 1809 Abraham’s mother died. He was very upset about his mother's death. Barely a year after Nancy’s death, Thomas remarried. Sarah Bush Johnston became Abraham’s step-mother. Sarah encouraged Abraham to read and he thoroughly enjoyed it. Neighbors said that Abraham would walk miles just to get a book.
Abraham Lincoln was a lawyer when he became interested in politics. He was elected for the Illinois State Legislature in 1834.
