The Truth: Abraham Lincoln was the president during most of the American Civil war. Inaugurated in March of 1861, he served as the president until his death in 1865. His election caused the first succession, South Carolina, from the Union. Other southern states followed, and in February of 1861, the Confederacy was formed. Although the reasons for succession and war are still debated, most historians agree that they were caused by a combination of the south’s discontent with their political representation, states’ rights, slavery, and an overall difference in the way of life of the two regions. …show more content…
The Film: This movie follows President Lincoln during the American Civil War in both his internal and external debates about ratifying the 13th Amendment. He predicts that after the war ends, slaves will once again be forced into labor. Lincoln is torn because the amendment must be passed before peace is restored, otherwise the southern states will vote against it. This creates his internal conflict because on one hand, he needs the war to go on so he can pass the amendment, but, on the other hand, he desperately wants the killing to stop. President Lincoln’s journey to get the bill passed is not easy. Although it passed in the Senate, the president needs more votes for it to pass in the House of Representatives. While the abolitionist Radical party heartily backs Lincoln’s plan, he has to get the Democrats on board with it. To do so, lobbyists bribe low-standing members to back his plan with guarantees of jobs if they are not reelected. Eventually, with one final push from Lincoln, it passed by two votes.
