Abraham Lincoln was more than just an important man, he was the man who ended slavery in the United States. He was the 16th president, lawyer, U.S. Representative, and the man who defeated the cruelty of men towards other human beings. Abe Lincoln is a very important historical figure because of the many things he did in his life. It all began on February 12, 1809 in a log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky. Early in Lincoln’s life, his mother died, causing his father to marry a widow, Sarah Johnston. Sarah and Abraham grew very close, and she encouraged Abraham to read even though she and her husband were illiterate. While running, he criticized the present president for allowing slavery and many other important figures. “Though Abraham Lincoln felt African Americans were not equal to whites, he believed that all men were created with certain inalienable rights,” (biography.com, Pg. 1, Par. 13). After winning the election, he had to fight the Confederate Soldiers to be able to free slaves. “In 1863, as the tide turned against the Confederacy, Lincoln emancipated the slaves and in 1864 won reelection,” (history.com, Pg. 1, Par. 4). Although he was president, he accomplished so much more throughout his life as well. We all know that Abe Lincoln was the 16th president, but is that it? One of his accomplishments was that he passed the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation helped free the slaves in America. He also made the decision to fight to prevent the nation from breaking apart. Most of the southern states had already seceded from the U.S., but Lincoln wasn’t fond of that idea. His army won and the country was once again whole. Overall, Abraham Lincoln’s accomplishments helped him to become a great leader and a great man.
