Abraham Lincoln: Differences Between The North And South

Decent Essays
There were a handful of differences between the North and South. But when it came to the “equality” of people, there were very little to no differences in the treatment of those of the opposite or opposing race. People in these regions of the country had very similar opinions of people of color. Some of theses opinions are the idea that colored people should not be able to marry between races, vote, and the idea that people of color will always be considered inferior. In America’s history, Abraham Lincoln is known for what he did for slaves. But what is forgotten is that Abraham Lincoln had a similar mindset of both Southerners and the Northerners. It is commonly portrayed in textbooks and articles that Abraham Lincoln spent so much time

Grant and Lee is a compare and contrast between their personal lives, political views, and how they would hold oneself. Abraham Lincoln and George Washington are two complete different people from different time periods where one had slavery and the other aimed to abolish it. In a compare and contrast of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington each one having their own personal lives, family, and historical actions, which made up some of their differences. Firstly, Abraham Lincoln was never a person who said that an African American and a white person were equal, but instead said that they were man like them so they should be allowed to obtain property like theirs. In his personal life, Abe had a unique upbringing and adulthood as he lived.…

African Americans should not only be free, but equal as well. An example to back up that he thought that African Americans not only should be free, but equal as well is when he talks about theirs white officers there should be black officers as well. Abraham Lincoln and the unknown slave goals are similar as they both believe that the slaves should be free/ fight for freedom. But Lincoln goals are different to those held by the slave at least in the beginning as Abraham Lincoln cares more about the well-being of the union than the unknown slave does or he does at the start of the war. Both Abraham and the unknown slaves goals are different to Alexander H Stephens / the confederacy goals as well as views by/ because the first two thought slaves should be free while the confederacy thought that Africans being slaves to a supper is natural and normal.…

During the Civil War, there were points where it looked like the South would win. However, the North had certain things going for them that allowed them to eventually triumph over the South. One of these were the critical battles of the war. There were nearly 8,000 recorded skirmishes between the Union and Confederacy. Technically, the South won more battles overall.…

In C. Vann Woodward’s book, The Strange Career of Jim Crow, Woodward talks about the “Twilight Zone” which was the period of myths. Woodward was the first Historian to write about race relations in the time period between 1860 and 1965. Woodward’s purpose of writing this book was to show that segregation even by law has always been prevalent, and to “make the attempt to relate to the origins and development of Jim Crowism to the bewildering rapid changes that have occurred in race relations” (C.V.W. 2nd Preface pg. 17). Woodward’s thesis throughout his book was that racial segregation, which was later known as Jim Crow in the South, did not begin immediately after the Civil War in 1865; moreover that race relations changed in the 1890s and…

The North’s Wealth In the American Civil War the North had an advantage for numerous reasons. The main and biggest reason was their wealth. The North was able to beat the South because of their wealth. It allowed them to buy more things than the South could and also supplied their troops. Since they had a lot of it, they had more options as well.…

I disagree with the statement “Although there are differences between the North and South, the racial attitudes of both sections were not far apart, nor is it correct to call the northern economy ‘industrial’ and the southern economy ‘agrarian.’ “ Although stating the differences between the North and the South promotes sectionalism, there still differences in the geography that cause these differences. I disagree with the part that says “the racial attitudes of both sections were not far apart”. Colored people may not have been very welcomed by some people in the North and South but there is a huge difference in how they were treated. In the South, the citizens were racist enough to treat colored people as property.…

Many in the North didn 't know the true aspects of slavery and the effect it had on black African Americans. Their thoughts would probably be that it was just only a working system. They didn 't necessarily know of the actual cruelty portrayed by the slave’s masters. According to the textbook, “Give Me Liberty” by Eric Foner, “Millions of northerners who had not been abolitionists become convinced that preserving the union as an embodiment of liberty required the destruction of slavery.” Northerners were beginning to know the truth of what the south really was and had one-hundred percent thought’s against slavery.…

However, contrary to what my high school education taught, the fundamental difference between the regions was not how they viewed African Americans. In fact, their racist tendencies are closer to a similarity than anything else. It is true that the North and South were of a similar back ground, religion, language, legal system, and even had an interconnected economy. However like McPherson says in his essay, these “same similarities prevailed between England and her North American colonies in 1776, but they did not prevent the development of a separate nationalism in the latter” (423-424). The most notable differences between the North and South were ones of ideology.…

They had nearly opposite views on most key issues. Slavery was the most obvious of these issues; it shaped and intensified conflict between the North and the South . The North completely opposed slavery but in the South slavery was generally accepted. The majority of Southerners approved of slavery because it was a way of life in the south. Most southerners could not fathom the idea of freeing millions of blacks .…

This was especially the case with the northern states. Championed by Abraham Lincoln, the north was definitely against the institution of slavery, however, they didn’t wish to go as far as to pronounce the Negro man as their equal in every respect. As stated by Lincoln in one of his debates with Stephen Douglas, just because it was his desire to have the institution of slavery eventually eradicated from the union and wanted to respect the God-given rights of the Negro man doesn’t mean he considered them to be equals with the white man. In fact, one could reasonably conclude from his many speeches, that Lincoln viewed African Americans as inferior beings and as a result believed that it was up to the superior white race to have mercy upon them and grant them certain rights.…

Economically the regions were very different, with the North being very industrial and independent, and the South relying heavily on the export of cotton to pay for the goods they needed to import. The federal government had a hard time creating fair taxes to keep both regions happy. Politically, the South fiercely believed in states' rights, while the North felt that a strong federal government could best lead the nation. Socially, the North and South differed on the issue of slavery and led very different lifestyles. Abolitionists fought for African-American freedom while many Southerners fought to keep the workers they needed to run their plantations.…

The North and South have always followed different paths and by the mid 1800’s the differences were even more pronounced. The North was becoming more industrial, dedicated to immigration, free labor and supported a federal government. Slavery was not common in the North and it was even banned in some states. The South’s agricultural economy was founded on slavery and cotton and they supported a government that allowed states to make their own rules. Southerners viewed the North and their views as them trying to destroy Southern culture with their industrialism and growing abolitionist movement.…
