His mother died at a young age of milk sickness. Milk sickness comes from the milk, dairy product, or meat from a cow that has fed on white snakeroot plant. This poison is called tremetol. She died when Abraham was only 9 years old. Lincoln had many different responsibilities when he was young. He dropped most of them to study law when he later served legislature for the US and Illinois. He ran for senate in 1854 and 1858 and was defeated both times. He did not give up, instead he ran for US president in 1860 and won the election. Lincoln’s biggest accomplishment was when he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that begin the process of freeing the american slaves. This was a big deal because slavery had been apart of American tradition since the early 1500’s. As soon as they were old enough, Twain, his brothers, and sisters had to work to help support the family. Twain later became a steamboat pilot. He earned $250 per month, almost $155,000 a year in today’s dollars. He enjoyed this job enough to convince his brother, Henry to pursue the same job. In 1858 Henry Clemens was training to be a steamboat captain as well when the boat exploded and threw the 20 year old into the water. He sustained major injuries. Samuel took the blame completely because he felt like it was his fault. Mark Twain’s accomplishments cannot be ranked, but his most popular book sells 200,000 copies a year. No matter how you look at the successes of these men, no doubt did they do some amazing things for our country. Abraham Lincoln didn’t give up when he lost the elections for senate. Instead, he ran for president of the United States. Not only did he win, but he went down in the books for best president to lead our country.
