The controversial topic of abortion is a pressing issue in today’s society. Abortion, by definition, is the termination of a human pregnancy. Unlike a miscarriage, abortions are intention rather than unintentional. This debate has not arisen recently; arguments about abortion have been present since the 1800s. Until the 1820s, abortions were not prohibited or regulated by any laws in the United States. In 1973 Roe, a single pregnant woman, sued on behalf of all women in a similar situation to overrule illegalization of abortions in Texas. Pro-life believes abortions should be made illegal under all circumstances. Pro-life advocates believe fetuses are humans and have a right to live. Dr. Micheline M. Mathews-Roth of Harvard medical says that, “It is incorrect to say that biological data cannot be decisive. It is scientifically correct to say that an individual human life begins at conception” (Live Action News). Saying that an unborn fetus is not yet a human until birth is incorrect; life begins at conception, therefore an unborn has a right to the life ahead of them. Making abortions illegal ensures that a child has a fair chance to a life they could lead. Not only do pro-life advocates have concern for the life of an unborn child, but they also have concern for women’s mental and physical health risks after having abortions. Women who have abortions are at risk for various mental health disorders such as PTSD, anxiety, anger and resentment, guilt, depression, substance abuse, and suicide. Dr. Coleman notes that, “…the literature on the psychological effects of abortion conducted over the last several decades indicates that a minimum of 10-20% of women experience adverse, prolonged, post-abortion reactions. This translates into at least 130,000 to 260,000 new cases of serious mental health problems each year in the U.S” (Report of The South Dakota Task Force to Study Abortion). Not only are women at risk for mental health complication, but women are also at risk for various physical healthy complication. These physical health risks include: infection, fever, bleeding, etc. Dr. Elizabeth Shadigan, a professor at the University of Michigan Medical school, states the statistics of physical health risks after abortions, “She presented testimony that addressed physical complications associated with abortion, noting that approximately 10% of women undergoing induced abortion will suffer immediate complications, of which approximately one
