“Your pregnant.” Those two words will change your life. Whether the news of your pregnancy changes your life for the better, or the news causes your life to go down hill, it will undoubtedly change your life. So now, you must decide what to do. Will you keep the baby? Put him or her up for adoption? Or, will you abort the fetus? Abortion is one of the leading controversial social justice topics people face. Each person has their own opinions and beliefs about abortion. When people have an opinion on abortion, they usually strongly agree with one side of the pro-life/ pro-choice debate. Abortion is defined as “the expulsion of a fetus from the uterus before it has reached the stage of viability, about 20 weeks in humans.” ("Abortion." Britannica School.) Every so often, an abortion isn 't necessarily planned, which is called a miscarriage. A miscarriage wouldn 't technically be an abortion, seeing as the majority of the time, they aren 't planned. A miscarriage is when the mother looses the baby while the baby is in the womb. When the abortion is planned, It is called an induced abortion. A woman may decide to have an abortion for any number of reasons. There is four general categories to file the reason for an abortion under. These reasons include: saving the life of the mother and/ or preserving the mental well being of her, to stop the baby from forming after conception occurred because of the pregnancy resulting from rape or incest, preventing the birth of a child with a serious deformity or illness, and preventing the completion of the pregnancy because of social and/or economic reasons. ("Abortion." Britannica School.) Although the bulk of the reasons fit into one of the categories listed above, there may be other reasons a woman chooses to abort the fetus. She may be forced by a spouse, partner, or a parent. Another reason could be that the woman just simply didn 't want the baby and chose to abort the fetus. Under the 14th amendment, abortion was legalized in 1973 during the Roe v.s. Wade case. Abortion remained a commonly used method to limit the size of a family in the Greco- Roman era. During the 1900’s abortions were not a hot topic, unless the mother died as a result of the abortion. Abortion was still considered illegal in the 1900’s even though few paid much attention to the topic. June 30th, 1980, it was ruled in the Harris v.s. McRae case that it wasn 't required by law for a woman 's abortion to be payed for by the government if she were to be on welfare. In December of 2015, a study showed that almost 58% of Americans believed that abortion should be legal in the bulk of cases. (“Sirs: Abortion Timeline”) Nearly all people are either pro- life or pro- choice.

The pro- life group believes that there is no other reason that can be considered moral to abort the fetus except when the reason for abortion is to save the life of the mother. multiple factors can influence a person 's reason for being a pro- lifer, but personal values and religious beliefs is a large contributor. If a person is pro- choice, that means that they believe than only the woman in question has the right to decide what to do with her body and the pregnancy, It is also that the government has no say in the decision the woman makes regarding the pregnancy. The group of people who believe that abortion is wrong, also known as the pro- life side of abortion, believe that at the time of conception, a fetus is a human being. They would consider it morally wrong to abort the fetus, seeing it the same as murder of a human outside of the womb. Some even believe that even if a woman were raped/ forced to have sex with incest, or even if the mom could be in danger, that aborting the baby is still wrong, despite the circumstances of the woman and the pregnancy.
