Short Paper Assignment – Abortion Abortion is an ongoing controversy that surrounds moral, legal, and religious issues. The debate of abortion is split into two main movements, pro-life and pro-choice. Pro-life is concerned with the rights of the unborn fetus, while pro-choice is concerned with the woman’s rights over her own body. The abortion debate has become a political and legal issue, with anti-abortion campaigners seeking to expand anti-abortion laws while abortion rights campaigners seeking to repeal such laws and ultimately expand access to abortion (Abortion Debate). Each movement has sought to influence public opinion and attain legal support, unfortunately small numbers of anti-abortion advocates have at times resorted to violence.

The argument really boils down to rights, a woman having a right to her own body and choices, and an unborn child having a right to simply live. Both pro-life and pro-choice have key points that I can agree with, yet I would say I lean more towards pro-life. Having unprotected sex is a choice and an unwanted pregnancy is a consequence. I do not believe that a woman should have the right to terminate a life because of the mistakes that she has made in her own. I do believe that life begins at conception or at least shortly thereafter, and that an embryo whether it has hit viability or not is a human with rights. I also believe that abortion is morally acceptable under certain circumstances, that of rape, incest, women’s health risk, or severe birth defects. With that said, I also believe in limited government. I cannot one hundred percent for sure say that I believe the government should have the only and final say in the decision of abortion. I can also agree with pro-choice arguments that making abortions illegal will not stop them all together, yet could actually do more harm to women seeking medically unprofessional abortions. Neither pro-life nor pro-choice are right or wrong. There already is recognition by pro-choice advocates that there is something awful about destroying a fetus. There has also been recognition by pro-life advocates that there is something terrible about depriving a woman of control over her body (Chapman). Most pro-choice advocates do not even consider themselves pro-abortion, and many pro-life advocates do not wish to take away a woman’s rights. Pro-life and pro-choice already agree that a solution to this issue would be to reduce the number of abortions, but they cannot seem to come together to do so. Both movements need to stop demonizing one another and come together to work towards a common goal. Some ways that the United States can reduce abortions would be to; educated young people about physical intimacy without encouraging premature sexual activity, have more campus discussions on considerate, careful sexual pleasure, make contraceptives more accessible and affordable for all, and teach and promote the importance of their use. Abortions should be viewed as a last resort and not presented as a casual medical procedure or a form of birth control. The mother and father to be need to be made fully aware of the process of an abortion from all sides, including the unborn child. Unfortunately, education does not always work and the desire to make abortions completely
