A woman should have the choice to do what she pleases with her body. Abortion has been a topic of heated debate for a long time. It was legalized in 1973 after Roe, a single pregnant woman fought against the state of Texas. Since then millions of abortions have taken place, but the debate over abortions still continues. Abortion is not a murder because there is no conclusive evidence or argument that a fetus is equal to a human being. Moreover, making abortion a choice can prevent unwanted pregnancies that result in educational deprivation, health problems, and also prevent an outsider from possessing the rights to control a woman’s body.
The origin of the argument that abortion is a murder is whether a fetus has human personhood. But does the personhood begin at conception? In order to answer this question, one has to understand the steps of pregnancy. After the cell is fertilized, a zygote is formed. This is followed by blastocyst formation. The following are the pictures of zygote and blastocyst:
From the pictures, it can be observed that both are nothing but lumps of cells, and neither of them has any characteristics of a human being. If we argue that the human personhood begins at the conception and abortion is murder, then we are assigning personhood to these cells. With this idea whenever a person urinates or scrapes his cheeks, the person is committing a murder because the person is killing the cells by expelling them.
