The first amendment is by no means a perfect and impeccable set of guidelines. However, the first amendment is vital to the way we live and express ourselves in the United States. The first amendment provides the people with rights and ways of living their everyday lives that are often taken for granted. The specific liberties encompassed in the first amendment, such as the freedom of the press, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, and freedom of petition, encourage individuality and opinion and are freedoms that embody the American pride in liberty. However, controversies have arisen over the extent of these freedoms and their influence on society. One of the most hotly debated controversies is abortion. Abortion is an unacceptable violation of human rights that should not be tolerated and allowed in this country that endorses freedoms based on human rights and morality. It is a blatant condemnation on the American ideals of freedom for equality and individual expression, which form the basis for the inclusion of the first amendment. An abortion is defined as “the medical process of ending a pregnancy so it does not result in the birth of a baby.” (“Abortion” 1). One of the major arguments for abortion is its use in cases of rape or incest.
