Interest groups are one of the basic fundamental aspects of the American society. Interest groups bring people together who have common interests, and sometimes for a common goal. A group may come in all forms and sizes. One of the most controversial interest groups are abortion special interest groups. In Texas, abortion is a hotly debated topic with recent sessions in Texas legislation. Recently, interest groups Planned Parenthood, The Center for Reproductive Rights and the ACLU “Filed a federal lawsuit” against an abortion law in Senate (Carmon, 2013). Planned parenthood also offers other health services to women. Some of the services include “Breast and cervical cancer screenings, HIV testing, and birth control” (Our, 2015). Planed Parenthood clinics were first started to make birth control available to women. The Planned Parenthood clinic in Austin was founded in 1937. Struggling with funding, volunteers kept the clinic open so that “The poor… could have access to birth control” (Our, 2015). The clinic grew and became vital due to the changing times. In the 1930’s clinics were built in Dallas and Fort Worth after they were inspired by Margaret Sangers fight for contraception. In the early 2000’s the clinic affiliates joined together and are now widely spread out through out North Texas. The clinic in Waco was started in 1939 and quickly grew to meet more health needs for the women in the community (Our, 2015) Planned Parenthood is one if the most common abortion interest groups in Texas, but they also have programs to help with sex …show more content…
Planned Parenthood exposes the statistic that “Texas has the third highest rate of teen pregnancies” and is taking steps to try to lower the rate. All the teachers of the education programs are well trained and equipped to give talks about pregnancy prevention to schools and facilities (Education, 2015). Studies have shown that teens who are given sex education by parents or an educator have lower risk of pregnancy. Because communication is important, Planned Parenthood has created “Talk First” which is a workshop for parents (Education, 2015). The workshop explains ways a parent can talk to their children about sex and healthy decisions. Sometimes teenagers will learn and absorb more when talking to people their own age, so Planned Parenthood has created a program for just that. The program is called “TACT” where a group of high school students from the Dallas area do performances for other teenagers in the community (Education, 2015). The performances cover a variety of topics that are relevant to teenagers today and they include “ Abstinence, dating violence, drunk driving, sexually transmitted infections, and teen pregnancy” (Education, 2015). The education programs that Planned Parenthood offer and now critically important because many schools are no longer teaching sex education.
