Abortion has always been a major issue in America since the passing of the major court case about abortion called Roe v. Wade in 1973. Abortion is still debated and talked about in America. Even though it may not be a big of an issue as America’s economic problems or America’s education system, abortion holds a deeper meaning to Americans. The history of abortion of how abortion came to be today is important to see where the ideas of abortion stemmed from and how the abortion issue started and evolved to the debates we have today. The different sides of the argument about abortion is also important to consider and how these types of viewpoints came to be. Roe v. Wade was an important U.S Supreme Court case that took place in America that decided the course of abortion in America. It took place on January 1973, and it was a challenge to the Texas law which made abortion a crime unless a woman 's life was at stake. The court case was filed by a woman whose real name was Norma McCorvey, but her legal pseudonym was Jane Roe. McCorvey was a 22 year old woman who wanted to end her pregnancy, but the Texas law during this time forbid all abortions unless the woman’s life was at risk. It was called Roe v. Wade because it was a court case from Jane Roe against the district attorney of Dallas County, Henry Wade, who passed the law that women could not get abortions except when they are in risk. The Constitutional question that was held was: Does the Constitution embrace the right of a woman to obtain an abortion, nullifying the Texas prohibition? After the ruling of Roe v. Wade, it answered the question and it said that there could be legal abortions during the entire pregnancy, but it set up conditions and allowed states to regulate abortions during the second and third trimesters.
