The vacant spot was huge concerning all types of issues, particularly abortion, and Trump campaigned on being pro-life and promised he would nominate a pro-life justice. He ended up with selecting Judge Neil Gorsuch, a character similar in ideology to the one he is replacing, Antonin Scalia. It should be noted that Scalia shared pro-life ideology and it was important that Trump nominated a pro-life person. Gorsuch is assumed to share similar beliefs, but he had never publicly made a comment on abortion. According to CNN’s Ariane de Vogue “Gorsuch has never ruled directly on Roe v. Wade, the landmark opinion legalizing abortion. But conservatives take comfort from some of the language in a book he has penned on assisted suicide (2017).” After his senate hearings and Republicans going to the “nuclear option,” Gorsuch was confirmed April 7th. New York Times contributor, Adam Liptak, explains that even with a pro-life judge [like Neil Gorsuch] being put on the bench will abortion still in favor of pro-choice. He writes “In June [2016], Justice Kennedy reassured supporters of abortion rights on this point, joining the court’s four-member liberal wing to strike down parts of a restrictive Texas abortion law by a 5-to-3 vote. A new justice opposed to abortion rights would tighten that tally but not tip it.” However, the Supreme is now at 5-4 in favor of abortion rights. If something were to happen to another Justice, like stepping down or dying, the courts could suddenly sway the other direction and President Trump would be able to again nominate the next Justice. Gorsuch will tighten the Supreme vote regarding abortion. Any legislation passed by the Republican majority Congress or an executive order signed by President Trump on abortion will be challenge in the courts, and should have a pro-choice
