Partial birth abortion, also known as late-term abortion, is abortion in the second and third trimester. Abortion, as defined by Oxford Dictionary, is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. Every 26 seconds, in the United States alone, an abortion takes place. Over 40% of unintended pregnancies end in abortion. In Minnesota alone, 94,300 of the 1,045,351 women of reproductive age became pregnant in 2011. About 12% of these pregnancies resulted in induced abortions (Lozier Institute). Many women believe that abortion is the termination of a pregnancy, but that is the termination of a life; something that has become acceptable in our society. Late-term abortion is significantly harmful to the women who do it. The techniques can be gruesome, and the reality behind partial-birth abortion is shocking. Although, many people may disagree.
The opposition makes the point that of low-income and younger women, gathering the necessary funds for the procedure often causes delays. Other reasons for having an abortion past 12 weeks: exposure to intimate partner violence, absence of partner due to estrangement or death, lack of financial and/or emotional support from partner, lack of pregnancy symptoms, seeming continuation of “periods,” irregular menses (Planned Parenthood).
