Abortion is a topic that few willingly discuss. Regardless of what point of view you hold, there will always be someone who dislikes your point of view and may even attempt to change your opinion. Then again, is that not the same for every opinion known to humanity? Abortion is an exceedingly important topic that warrants discussion. Being a topic that involves the safety and life of women and their unborn children, this is not a matter that should be taken lightly. These days, activists of various causes and groups push abortion in hopes of removing the negative stigma that remains around the procedure. However, according to a study written about by Ephrat Livni, “An increasing amount of public school sexual education instructors are teaching kids to “just say no to sex” as the only way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, a study says.” The study was done by Alan Guttmacher Institute, a non-profit health organization in New York City and Washington, DC. Although this reflects a trend in the United States of America, the trend is nevertheless worrisome. If students are being taught to “just say no to sex”, then what happens when they choose to say yes? They may not have been paying attention if their parents have said anything about the matter, others haven’t been told anything because their parents wouldn’t bring up such a taboo topic without being asked by their teenager, or they may simply have forgotten if it was just a discussion or two. This lack of proper education indicates a lack of knowledge about the matter for students; if students don’t know about the topic, and they’re told that it’s the only way by their teachers, will they really want to look it up themselves? The possible scenarios are plentiful, yet many lead to the same outcome: an unwanted pregnancy due to lack of
