The topic on abortion involves my response to a woman who has been struggling between aborting and keeping her baby. Susan, a career driven woman has been waiting for many years to have a baby. The Christian worldview strongly opposes the idea of removing a fetus or embryo from the womb before it can survive on its own. Christians believe that life starts at the moment of conception. They think it is immoral and unethical to end a pregnancy. In addition, abortion can be described as murder, which Christians feel is absolutely wrong. Exodus 20:13 says “you shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13, New International Version). These core worldview commitments of Christians set up moral standards that are common practice for Christians. Simply stated, the sixth of the Ten Commandments forbids the unjustified taking of a human life. God instructed us to be fruitful and multiply, therefore, abortion violates many of his request. In many ways, abortion offends God. It is never a mere personal choice but a grave offense against God and His creation. Abortion disrupts the natural order. As soon as life begins in the mother’s womb, the development of the embryo should not be disrupted. The right to live is a moral principle based on the belief that a human being has the right to live and specifically should not be unjustly killed by another human being. If God made it his plan to bless Susan with precious human life then she should accept his gift no matter the circumstance. Unluckily, a blood test reveals that her baby has Down syndrome. She is advised by doctors and an influential professor to abort the fetus. However, she feels extremely uncomfortable about the decision. According to the Christian worldview, Susan should respond to situation by keeping her baby. The Christian teaching on abortion is clear and unequivocal: Abortion is murder and against God’s law. Although her baby would suffer with Down syndrome, Susan should make the ethical decision of keeping the baby. She ignores the act of removing her fetus and going against God’s law. Her decision is based upon the fact that abortion causes more suffering and her child will still have a chance of living a productive
