Abortion is a topic that is fiercely debated in the United States. The ethics of abortions is questionable and many people dispute if it should be legal in the United States. With so many opinions and perspectives regarding abortion, it is imperative that information is gathered from reliable sources to give an accurate portrayal of what abortion is and how it affects people’s lives. The following examines a website called the Guttmacher institute, that supplies information and statistics about abortions, my previous knowledge on the subject, and thought-provoking facts on the topic of abortion.
One of the surprising things about abortion is how frequently it occurs. According to Finer and Zolna “Half of pregnancies among American women are unintended, and about four in 10 of these end in abortion” (2016). This high number of abortions is mostly by young woman in there teens and 20s “Women in their 20s account for more than half of all abortions: Women aged 20–24 obtain 33% of all abortions, and women aged 25–29 obtain 24%” (Jones, Finer, and Signgh, 2010). Most woman who choose to have an abortion are lower class woman who cannot afford the burden of another child or are unable to give up their jobs to raise a child due to obligations elsewhere “Three-fourths of women cite concern for or responsibility to other individuals; three-fourths say they cannot afford a child; three-fourths say that having a baby would interfere with work” (Finer, 2005).
