Abortion is a topic that is fiercely debated in the United States. The ethics of abortions is questionable and many people dispute if it should be legal in the United States. With so many opinions and perspectives regarding abortion, it is imperative that information is gathered from reliable sources to give an accurate portrayal of what abortion is and how it affects people’s lives. The following examines a website called the Guttmacher institute, that supplies information and statistics about abortions, my previous knowledge on the subject, and thought-provoking facts on the topic of abortion.

I knew there were health risks for woman undergoing abortions. The earlier a baby is aborted the less likely a woman is to suffer any physical damage; however, there are still significant risk factors to a woman who undergoes an abortion. Heavy bleeding can occur and sometimes a woman’s organs, such as the cervix or uterus, can be damaged to the point that a woman can no longer conceive a child. There is often heavy emotional baggage that comes with the decision to abort a baby. Many times women are harassed for their decisions or full of regret after the procedure is over. “We found that clinics in the Midwest were more likely to experience harassment than those located in the northeast and west” (Jerman and Jones, 2014: P 423). Most churches and religious organizations also do not support abortion and condone those who are willing to perform them. There are often times people who stand outside the clinics protesting and holding signs with pictures of babies who were previously aborted. The Guttmacher institute website has provided a wealth of accurate information to help research and understand the topics being studied. I was surprised during my study of abortion at the many statistics covering such a wide range of topics. I discovered facts about abortion and the different laws that surround it, as well as the different demographics of people receiving them. The different graphs and articles were also very helpful in order to get a full perspective of the issue. Instead of picking an opinion based on my feelings or emotions about the problem, I was able to research and find out facts about the topic. Abortion is never an easy decision and by researching and understanding the topic from both perspectives helps us make educated choices on how to address the
