It is necessary to observe what actions the Canadian government is taking in response to the harsh conditions that was in the Indian Residential School system. Although circumstances in the classroom are no longer as severe as it was in the past, it is important to bring attention to the ever-existing problems Aboriginal People are still fighting for. As stated by Collections Canada (2006), residential schools were used deliberately to break down the transmission of culture and language from one generation to the next. Moreover, students of Aboriginal decent were often physically and sexually abused, put down and labeled as outcasts in classrooms. The First Nations Control of First Nations Education Act shows a step towards change in Aboriginal education, however, it is important to question if the Canadian government fully supports this motion. Under legislation, the federal government has the power to override First Nations schools, and to set and administer the standards of these schools. Essentially, the Minister has the right to take school authority if problems were found in the new education system proving that the First Nations do not fully have control over their education.
