What are some of the key issues teachers need to consider for working successfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students?

Throughout history European settlement has caused devastating effects on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people these including the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from their land and families, as well as the introduction of westernisation and policies and practices that brought about injustices to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people leading to destructive effects on their culture (SNAICC 2010, p.6).
Not only have these past events been devastating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, they have also “left a tragic legacy to the educational outcomes and opportunities for Aboriginal young people” (Beresford 2012, p.119). This essay will address these key issues identifying them as matters that teachers need to consider for working successfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

Price (2012, p.4) states that “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have always had their own education” however, regulated learning and enforced participation were introduced by Western education.
