Animal cosmetics testing had become very popular in the decade. Many people are wanting to make sure the products they are using are not harmful to themselves and others. Animal cosmetic testing is performing a test of certain cosmetics for the safety and hypoallergenic properties of the products used by humans. This type of testing is very harmful to animals due to the type of tests performed as well as the chemicals used, and as a result of this, animal testing is opposed by animal rights activists and others. I believe that animal testing is very harmful due to certain chemicals and it should be abolished in the United States of America. Animal testing is a way for people to clearly make sure products are safe to use. When a product is being tested, manufacturers bring in an animal and use the product on different areas on the body. Take a rabbit for example. Testers take an amount of a chemical and measure how long it takes to react on certain areas, like an eye, or skin. After the test is completed, most animals are killed. This is not always the case though, manufacturers may decide to keep the animal alive to continue to …show more content…
Some types of tests include: skin sensitization, acute oral toxicity, repeat dose and subchronic toxicity. Most of these tests mentioned are performed on rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, and rats. Each test is performed over a certain amount of time. For example, the repeat dose is a 28 day process and the subchronic toxicity is a 90 day process. The repeat dose consists of 40 rats for a 28 day process, the rats will either be force fed, have the chemical rubbed on skin, or will breathe in the chemical daily for the amount of time. This type of test looks for cell and organ deficiency. Once the time is up, the animal is killed and its body is examined. The examination is what determines whether the chemical is safe to use or
