In 1997, Abolghasem Mesbahi, a former senior Iranian intelligence official who switched alliances to Germany, claims Iran contracted the bombing to Ahmed Jibril, leader of the terrorist group Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP-GC). Mesbahi said that the Iranians wanted to copy what happened to the Iranian Airbus with a minimum 290 people dead (Rayner). The initial focus of the CIA, which was also that the PFLP-GC was sponsored by the Iranian regime to blow up Pan Am 103 in revenge for shooting down Iran Air flight 665, corroborates Mesbahi’s claims.
