When the Germans occupied Hungary, the Jews came under new rules and were denied many of their rights. As discussed in the earlier parts of the book, some rights the Jews were denied are: the community leaders were arrested, Jewish valuables like gold and silver are confiscated, and all Jews are forced to wear a yellow star. Eventually the Jews are even confined to small ghettos and cannot leave for more than three days.
