At the end of Act 1 of the Crucible, Abigail and Betty accuse around 39 women of being “with the Devil”, or performing witchcraft. The result of their accusations is shown in Act 2. Abigail and Betty have obtained such an enormous amount of power and credibility in such a short amount of time. Their accusations are not taken lightly nor even questioned when the majority of the names they have spoken seem to just have been at random. One accusation, however, seems deliberate and that is the accusation of Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail has been having an ongoing affair with John Proctor, Elizabeth’s husband.
