Hold up, Abigail!
In the play The Crucible there was a lot of conflict that interfered with many lives in the town of Salem. The story behind it all was that Arthur Miller, who is the playwriter, wrote many unique plays that the government thought were suspicious. They listed him as a communist because of his strong beliefs. After Miller found this information out, he wanted a way to speak his beliefs about what was going on and how he felt about the situation without getting into trouble. This is where The Crucible became the key to all of his problems without anyone knowing. In the play, there is a group of people that are strict Christians, called Puritans. She begs and wants pity from him. In the play, Abigail speaks from her heart by saying, “I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart! I never knew what pretense Salem was, I never knew the lying lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenanted men! And now you bid me tear the light out of my eyes? I will not, I cannot! You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet! John, pity me, pity me!” (177). By looking at the previous quote, she wanted to speak her mind and say that she was in love with him and she can not imagine what life would be without him. This quote would go well with the song because Beyonce expresses the same amount of emotion Abigail was feeling. In the song she says, “...can’t you see there’s no other man above you? What a wicked way to treat the girl that loves you…” This relates with Abigail because she puts John first even when it came to religion. She lied about witchcraft so she could kill Elizabeth and try to take her place. One of the Puritans ten amendments was to never lie. She made up a ridiculous story about witchcraft and made the town believe it. As ridiculous as this sounds she manage to proceed with her plan. This act plays a big part in the play’s theme hysteria. In a Puritan society, the act of adultery was just unthinkable because of the Puritan bible. This terrible act could be a death sentence towards the society. Finally, Abigail stopped and finally saw the big picture. She sees that her plan is not working as well as she thought.”...On the last night of my joy, some eight months past. She used to serve me in my house, sir. A man may think Gold sleeps, but God sees everything, I know that now. I beg you, sir, I beg you --see her what she is...She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave!..But it is a Whore’s vengeance, and you must see it; I set myself entirely in your hands” (220). Imagine of what could have been going through her mind at this time. She didn’t know what to do. All she could do is take a breath, and open her eyes and see reality. The background music does a great job describing how Abigail is feeling during this time. The slow but up beat rhythm shows how she sees the situation slowly falling apart and gradually opening her eyes to see reality. This can relate to the theme Intolerance as well but in this case she knows that it is truly over. Base on the society she loves in they both could die from this outrageous act.
