Abigail Williams Mean Girl Analysis

Abigail Williams: The Ultimate “Mean Girl” Abigail Williams serves as the ultimate mean girl; manipulating her friends, telling lies to save herself, and accusing others of death punishable crimes. She does not care what she has to do, she will get her way in the end even if that means others have to die. Abigail serves as the antagonist throughout The Crucible destroying other people 's lives with the only intentions of self happiness. It does not matter who one is, Abigail would throw them under the bus if it meant she got away clean. . One huge event that shows her self centered characteristic is that which involves her falsely accusing Elizabeth Proctor of witchcraft in thought the John Proctor will end up with her. Not all characters are easily swayed by Abigail 's lies, Elizabeth Proctor herself even says “ She’d dare not call out such a farmer’s wife but there be monstrous profit in it. She thinks to take my place, John” (61). Abigail is simply desperately in love with John and only cares that she be with him in the end, that she be the one it accept his love, even if it means sending an innocent woman to her death. The readers especially get to see how self centered Abigail is when she lies in court and the end result is John getting accused of witchcraft and getting sentenced to jail for it. Abigail let the man she loved die to save herself. She could have stopped it, she could have prevented many deaths, but that is not the way Abigail works, it is never her head and always others. Obviously Abigail does not care about the ones she loves but, her uncle Parris learned that the hard way. Abigail made a fool out of Parris she left him without hint of where she was going. There was a needle in the poppet and that night Abigail gets stabbed by a needle, coincidence? One must not think so. Mary tells readers that Abigail saw her make it, Abigail saw the needle in it and jumped at the opportunity. She knew the poppet would be in Elizabeth’s house and she knew that if she was “stabbed” by a needle and Cheever saw the needle in the poppet he would have no choice but to arrest Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail fixed and times the situation perfectly, in fact it was so good that it worked. It is one thing to accuse the wife of one’s love but to turn on one’s close friend in court is another thing. Mary Warren thought she was Abigail’s friend, better yet she thought if she confessed to their lies Abigail would have to go with it, that was not case. Abigail accuses Mary Warren in open court exclaiming “ Oh, Mary, this is a black art to change shape. No I cannot, I cannot stop my mouth; it’s God’s work I do”(115). Abigail takes the spotlight and accusations of her and turns them onto Mary. She gets the other girls to go with it and yet again, it works, Abigail 's manipulation prevails and she walks free. She only cares about herself and went as far as manipulating and lying to set up her own friend for death. These were clever manipulation tactics, however they would be nothing without her willingness to lie in combination with her self centered
