I want to paint a picture for you. I want to depict a specific moment in time, in hopes that you may better understand my client. Imagine: you’re deep in the woods. Trees guard your every path. Fallen branches and torn grasses claw at your feet. Imagine your shivering body, clad in a thin nightgown, running from the demons that attempt to knock you to your knees. Now imagine how you got there. Imagine how you have reached such a belittling point that your only hope was to run as fast as you could, not caring what parts of your shaking body you hurt in the process. The only difference is, you don’t have to imagine. Because it did happen. Not to any of you, but to someone you know. Someone in this very room. Abigail Williams was found dancing in the woods. She was found with an elderly Barbados woman, and her closest friends. They spent that night dancing and crooning over the …show more content…
Neither of us came into this courtroom today to deny that fault in her character. She knows what she’s done. You know what she’s done. But does a child deserve to be hanged for crimes that were established out of guilt and fear for her life, and for the sake of her family? She is no murderer. She is no stain on the history of Salem. She was simply defending herself out of fear for her own life. She was fearful that you, the jury, would have the capability to send her to the noose. So she began to say anything that she believed could save her life. Unfortunately, she stumbled upon words that stuck with the town. And not knowing how to release the information that she was false, and she was, in fact, lying the entire time, she kept quiet, and watched in horror as the town single-handedly tore itself apart. She is so young, so inexperienced. She is naive beyond belief. But she is just a child. She knows her faults as you know yours. But this girl knew she would hang if she was convicted of this malfeasance harbored out of guilt and
