This demonstrates how most men are self absorbed and are only concerned about their own well being during this time period. In 1692 Salem Massachusetts, male characters such as Reverend Parris gain power through their lies and greed, while the female characters such as Elizabeth Proctor are portrayed as subordinate figures who lack both a voice and a sense of power in a Puritan society. Abigail is an orphan who has a deep love for John and is driven by a lust for power. She is manipulative and a magnificent liar. When Abigail is on the brink of getting busted for dabbling in witchcraft, she quickly turns the table and points her finger at the poor slave girl Tituba. “She comes to me while I sleep, she’s always making me dream corruptions!” (Miller 40) Abigail screams pointing toward Tituba. It is ironic that Abigail is the one going around accusing everyone else when she is the one who encourages witchcraft in the first place. Abby is a strong character because she gains power through her lies. When she says someone is a witch everyone believes her, even if she is just pulling lies out of thin air. Abigail Williams manages to excite her army of girls allowing them to condemn people as witches. Abigail is an excellent manipulator because she finds out everyone’s flaws and weaknesses and then uses it against them. She frames Elizabeth Proctor for witchcraft as a part of her master plan to be with John. However, she loses her last shred of humanity by incriminating John even though she says she loves him deeply. Abigail Williams is seen as the antagonist and someone who can chill people to the
