In act one, many characters liked to avoid getting in trouble. But Tituba has the biggest lie of all. In the story, she brought the girls out to the woods for dancing, and for conjuring the devil in order to bring death to Reverend Parris. When Abigail called her out and made it sounds like it was all her fault, she lied saying she did not do anything of that nature and was not conducting witchcraft. And after, Tituba blamed other characters to lie more and make it sounds like none of it was her fault.…

I always hear her laughing in my sleep. I hear her singing her barbados songs and tempting me with-” (Miller 930-933). When really, none of that really happens to Abigail. Then Tituba kind of does the same and start to point fingers at other people.…
Although Abigail does not work she the devil, she still is motivated by her own demons of jealousy. The Salem Witch Trials are a product of theocratic repression that spawned an ideology in which if something wasn’t good, it was automatically evil. This manifests in Abigail as jealousy towards Elizabeth because she is married to John Proctor, whom Abigail has been previously involved with in an illicit affair. Since Abigail was the niece of Reverend Parris, she assumed herself to not be of suspicion of witchcraft, although she and other girls danced in the forest with Tituba. This cockiness was another reason she was so confident in her own jealousy of Elizabeth.…
Tituba stated, “You beg me to conjure! She beg me make charm.” So Tituba confessed because Abigail was saying that Tituba goes to her house to make her drink blood. And if she could conjure spirits that could mean that she might be working for the devil.…
One of the reasons why Abigail is most to blame for the witch trials is because how often Abigail makes false accusations throughout the play. Firstly, Abigail accuses Tituba of witchcraft right in the beginning when she told the girls that “Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam‘s dead sisters” (Act 1 Scene I). Abigail knew she would be in trouble if anyone found out what the girls were doing in the forest when the townsmen suggested to call Hale, so Abigail automatically…
In order to try and preserve their life characters lie in order to escape punishment. When Abigail is being questioned about doing witchcraft she says Tituba the slave from Barbados “sends her spirit on me in church; she makes me laugh at prayer”(187) and “she makes me drink blood”(187). Abigail is blaming her mistakes on Tituba in hopes of avoiding punishment alike people now in days who are willing to do all it takes to get what they want even if it means risking others’ life.…
Additionally, Abigail is responsible for inappropriate occurrences such as purposely stabbing herself with a needle and blaming Elizabeth then claiming Elizabeth harmed her through magic. The motive behind her actions appear because Abigail had an affair with John Proctor, Elizabeth’s husband, which resulted in the firing of Abigail and the tarnishing of her reputation. To revenge Elizabeth’s actions, Abigail drinks blood, which was a charm created by Tituba and which Abigail drinks in an attempt to kill Elizabeth. As shown through a further analysis of Abigail’s actions, its clearly seen how unstable she is and how she completely abolishes any thought that could have seen her as the…
By naming off townspeople they had known for years and saying they saw them with the Devil, it saved Abigail, Tituba and Betty from getting in considerable trouble. The most prominent example of this is when Abigail becomes hysteric in court, and accuses Mary Warren for her actions. Abigail and Mary Warren are very good friends, and it was a shock when Abby turned on Mary and accused her of witchcraft. “To the ceiling, in a genuine conversation with the ‘bird’, as though trying to talk it out of attacking her: But God made my face; you cannot want to tear my face. Envy is a deadly sin, Mary”…
Abigail says they were just dancing, though it soon comes out that Tituba was trying to conjure dead spirits. Under threat of punishment if she refuses to confess, Tituba breaks down and admits she communed with the devil. She begins to name other witches in town. Abigail, seeing that she’ll be punished unless she joins Tituba in naming names, leaps up and begins to name more witches. Betty wakes and joins in” (Litcharts).…
“I saw Sarah Good with the devil! I saw goody Osburn with the devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the devil!” (Miller, 1996, p.25) These are some of the false accusations that Abigail yells after Tituba confesses.…

Since the beginning of time, humans have been generally selfish people. When put in dangerous situations, the human race tends to be selfish, as in that moment all that matters is surviving. However, this selfishness can result in immoral decisions, potentially hurting others as a result of these selfish decisions. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, selfishness plays a key role as to why innocents are put to their deaths because of other people’s desire to prosper in society. The characters in the story are able to put their morals aside, and create false accusations putting others in danger for their own benefit.…
