Abigail is known as a static character promptly because she has the same motive from the beginning of the Crucible up until she unexpectedly vanishes. Abigail wants to have John Proctor all for herself so she "You drank the charm to kill Goody Proctor" (pp. 175). I agree with Winona Ryder about Abigail being a villain. First, she told her friends that she would kill them if they told anyone. If she wouldn't have been guilty, she wouldn't have told them that. Abigail doesn't need power. She had to have done something realy bad in order for her to try to hide it that bad.…

This allusion is referring to Moses parting the seas of Israel for the Israelites to escape from the Egyptian Pharaoh's armies. Nearly all allusions in this play are alluding to the Bible. This one indicates that Abigail has a god-like power of redemption over the town. It also shows how she is the leader of all the young girls in this town. She will be the one to save the girls from others doing ‘witchcraft’ against them.…

In the Crucible, Abigail is portrayed as the villian, using her wits and countless lies to deceive the town into thinking that witchcraft is taking place in the small town of salem. Little did she know that she would be the cause of dozens of deaths, all because she was afraid to get in trouble. Her fear drove her to continue on with her fabricated stories, even after her beloved John Procter confronted her. Why Throughout the story abigail is constantly lying, wearing a false persona of a girl chosen by god to drive the witches away from salem. Each person she accused of being a witch who didn’t confess were ruthlessly hanged, all people who lived normal lives before Abigail decided to put the title of witch on their name.…

Many of the characters- based off the people of the Salem Witch Trials- at one point or another, betrayed somebody or felt betrayed all for the reason of fear and sin. Abigail, one of the main characters in the play, was the largest leader in this circle of fear or have others fear you. By gaining her voice, she threatened everybody who harmed her, claiming all in her way was a witch, all for the reasons of lust and greed. Had she not fallen in love with Proctor in the play, the trials may not have happened.…

While Abigail was the driving force of the plot and caused many of the horrible events in Salem, I don’t think she is entirely to blame. People are products of their environment and Abigail’s environment had shaped her into an emotional, unstable young girl. I’m sure her need for attention and love started with the death of her parents and when John Proctor betrayed her love and stayed with his wife this need reached an all-time high, driving her into a temporary insanity. In the beginning she had no intent to involve witchcraft but instead wanted everyone to forget about it. But when she saw there was no escape from it, she embraced it.…

Imagine yourself feeling so much guilt, that you confess to an action you did not commit? Imagine having your voice become shut down because of someone you trusted. Unable to say the truth and have that weight lifted off of your shoulders. This happens more often than you think and occurs because of safety, attention, and those who manifest the thought that they actually committed the crime. The first element, safety, is just simply that.…

During her time with the Proctor family, she began an affair with John Proctor. His wife, Elizabeth Proctor, soon finds out about it and fired Abigail. This leads Abigail to become angry with Elizabeth, as she believes Elizabeth stands in the way of what she wants, a relationship with John. This anger serves as the motivation for Abigail’s actions throughout the rest of the play. Abigail’s, “...illegitimate desire for Proctor fuels her actions against innocent townspeople” (Bovard, 82).…

An evidence of this is when Abigail said, “She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman” (Miller 24). This means she is accusing Elizabeth Proctor for making bad rumors throughout town and will have revenge on her. Abigail is doing this because she envies John and Elizabeth’s relationship and only wants John Proctor to herself.…

Her own greedy ambition and lustful desires cause her to soil Goody Proctor’s name in an attempt to break apart the marriage so that she and John may live undisturbed for the rest of their lives. Throughout the story, Abigail continually reminds John Proctor of the affair. When John tries to resist Abigail’s advances and tells her “we never touched, Abby,” Abigail slyly remarks, “Aye, but we did.” She manipulates John Proctor’s psyche by reminding him that he “loved [Abigail], and whatever sin it is, [Proctor] loved [Abigail] yet!” Abigail constantly and manipulatively reminds Proctor of the affair because she wants to keep the scandalous romance alive to fulfill her own lecherous desires.…

“Islam only knows the language of hatred against alien races and religions” (Imre Kertesz, 2002). This quote shows how easily hysteria can spread, such as in the wake of 9/11, and how this can lead to persecution. This has happened numerous times throughout history and can be seen in the play The Crucible. The Crucible is a play by Arthur Miller, which tells a fictionalized version of the Salem Witch Trials and how hysteria can be spread through a community but will eventually fail; all of which is an allegory for the McCarthy era communist trials. The Crucible demonstrates that the motivations of Abigail enable her to create hysteria and thus use this hysteria for the society’s personal agendas; and this hysteria has the ability to spread…

In The Crucible, Arthur Miller has many characters who can shoulder the blame for the wickedness that occurred in 1692, during the Salem Witch Trials. The character most to blame is Abigail Williams, whose character flaws are lust, envy, and vengefulness. These flaws are what causes the people of Salem to be accused, and spark the events of the Salem Witch Trials. The flaws that Abigail possess are also three of the main “7 Deadly Sins”. Abigail Williams shows lust as she longs for the love of John Proctor and the affair she had with him.…
