First in the being when Parris asked her what else they did in the woods she tell “We did dance, uncle, and when you leaped out of the bus so suddenly, Betty was frightened and then she fainted. And there’s the whole of it.”(Miller 10) But come to find out later that that's not all they did she was lying. Not only were they dancing but Abigail took part in witchcraft in drinking blood to kill Elizabeth Proctor. Another example of Abigail being a liar is when her and Proctor are talking after he saw Betty and tell him “She is blackening my name in the village! She telling lies about me! She is a cold sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a--.”(Miller 23) Abigail is lying and pretending to be mad at Elizabeth for damaging her reputation. But the bigger reason she is mad is because she is jealous that Elizabeth and proctor are still together and that she did not split them apart so she can be with him.
To conclude, Abigail Williams has been a manipulative vengeful liar from the beginning of the play. Her character allows readers of The Crucible to understand that at the end of rough times the people who always win are the ones that use people to get off the hook.
